Improve our schools. Protect our seniors. Make Maryland affordable.

Sebastian Johnson is a lifelong Montgomery County resident and Democrat running for State Delegate to represent District 19.

Meet Sebastian

Sebastian Johnson grew up in Montgomery County and is a proud alum of its public schools. He is running for state delegate in District 19 to improve our schools, protect our seniors, and help Marylanders struggling to afford the basics.

Sebastian was raised by his mom Denise, a 30-year veteran teacher. Public service has been his calling since he served as the Student Member of the Montgomery County Board of Education in high school. He followed his mother into the classroom after graduating from Georgetown University, joining Teach for America in 2010. His time in the classroom inspired him to pursue a Master in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Sebastian has worked in a range of policy spaces, from taxation and education to criminal justice and child welfare, with a focus on solutions that allow vulnerable children and their families to thrive.

Today, Sebastian manages his own small business advising philanthropies and major nonprofits. He is also proud to serve District 19 as their elected representative on the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee, where he helps to keep MoCo blue. Sebastian and his wife Keerat will celebrate 20 years together this fall, and live with their daughter Aneesa in Glenmont.

  • “In my long career in public life, I have gotten to know many elected officials. Sebastian is among the most gifted and inspiring young leaders I’ve had the pleasure of endorsing. He has demonstrated his commitment to our community since he served on the school board twenty years ago. I am excited to support his candidacy for state delegate, and know he will be the strong leader that Montgomery County needs in Annapolis.”

Isiah “Ike” Leggett, Former Montgomery County Executive

  • “Sebastian will be a fierce supporter of rent stabilization, good cause eviction, progressive taxation, and our LGBTQIA+ neighbors. We need his progressive leadership in Annapolis, and I’m proud to endorse him.”

Kristin Mink, Montgomery County Councilmember, District 5

  • “We need leaders in Annapolis who will invest in the next generation, and bring a deep understanding of how public policy impacts our communities every day. Sebastian has spent years doing meaningful public policy work, and his experiences as a former teacher and school board member provide him a unique perspective on the challenges facing our schools and families. He understands how to connect policy to people, and I know he will be a thoughtful, effective champion for education, working families, and our community as a state delegate. I’m proud to endorse him.”

Shebra Evans, Montgomery County Council, At-Large

  • “Sebastian is a leader who listens, and who will show up for working families. Those who serve in local government know team work is critical to getting things done. I’m endorsing Sebastian because Montgomery County needs his collaborative leadership in Annapolis.”

Kate Stewart, Montgomery County Councilmember, District 4

  • “I’ve known Sebastian for over 20 years, since he worked in my office on efforts to build the Purple Line. He remains committed to sustainable development and increasing transit options for all communities. I’m excited to endorse him for state delegate, and to have a champion for smart growth in Annapolis.”

George Leventhal, Former Montgomery County Councilmember

  • “I served with Sebastian on the Board of Education, where he was a passionate and effective voice for every student, with a deep understanding of the needs of immigrant families, students of color, and all families in our community. I believe that schools are the epicenter of our communities. They are where we see, in real time, how policies impact quality of life, access to healthcare, economic security, affordable housing, transportation, public safety, and child care. Sebastian understood those connections and used the power of his personal story to advocate for equity and access and to fight for our immigrant students on Capitol Hill. I know he will continue to be a strong champion for our public schools in Annapolis, and I’m proud to support him.”

Nancy Navarro, Former Montgomery County Councilmember

  • “Sebastian will work to speed Maryland’s transition to a sustainable future, by making it easier to build renewable energy and increasing our investment in the green economy. We need his forward-thinking leadership in Annapolis, and I am proud to endorse him.”

Hans Riemer, Former Montgomery County Councilmember
